Elgin, Texas is located in both Travis and Bastrop Counties, approximately 19 miles east of Austin. The 2000 year census recorded an estimated population of 5,700, and that figure has nearly doubled today. Elgin is named after a Texas railroad commissioner, Robert Morris Elgin, who moved a flooded railway depot 10 miles away and established the Glasscock station, later renamed after Elgin.
